first half marathon experience - Airtel Delhi Half Marathon

I wanted to pen down my thoughts last night (before the run) and conclude today with the post run bit. But laziness got the better of me.

Any ways here it goes

########### thoughts last night ##########
Having done a few 15 K runs without much trouble in the past month, i am looking forward to the run tomorrow. I have been loading on carbs and fluids for the last week so that should help too. I think first 500 finish is reasonable.

########## Post run##############
The first 7-8 Kms were good I went at the planned pace. The idea was to make the time in the last half. And I thought perhaps a top 1000 finish is reasonable. On the half way mark i pushed the making time part a little further down, to the last 5-6 K, and top 3000 finish seemed good at this point. And on reaching the last 4 K, i could hardly walk, let alone run, and up went in flames dreams of top finishes, just finishing seemed a sweet alternative. My limbs were getting heavier with every step (what a coincidence just last night i saw some portions of face-off, the movie, scenes where they used magnetized shoes to control the inmates, my shoes seemed to stick to the tarmac), even the load bearing muscles of my neck were screaming. There were so many trouble areas, mostly mental i guess, my ITBS prone knee wasn't holding well, the ankle seemed sore, so did the calves, stomach, chest, and perhaps also the nail of the pinky.

Bottom line - I finished the first half marathon a full 33 minutes slower, at 2:33 hrs, than my target. I wonder how much of the pain is physical? The 33 minute burden is not helping for sure.

The goddamed endorphins never kicked, they are supposed to keep you floating when everything else is crumbling. On the contrary i felt totally zapped physically and mentally, the feet refused to move. I wanted to throw myself on the ground and ....... cry!!

Congratulations to all who crossed the line on a high! And for every one else ... we will cross it smiling next time

Alas some consolation :-)
